E' il 20 marzo del 1994 quando a Mogadiscio un commando somalo uccide la giornalista inviata del tg3 Ilaria Alpi e l'operatore Miran Hrovatin. I due si trovavano sul posto per seguire l'operazione “Restore Hope”, lanciata dagli Stati Uniti a cui partecipa anche un contingente italiano, per provare a porre risoluzione alle guerre intestine che devastano la Somalia. Da quel giorno ha inizio la storia di uno dei misteri ancora irrisolti della nostra storia. Italia e Somalia, due Paesi così lontani, ma legati da un filo rosso che Ilaria e Miran stanno cercando di documentare. I due avrebbero scoperto un traffico illecito di armi e rifiuti in cui il mondo politico, economico, istituzionale e militare italiano agiva da autentico protagonista.
In quelle inchieste condotte da Alpi e Hrovatin doveva esserci qualcosa di scottante, verità ancora oggi ostacolate e messe quasi in ridicolo dalla commissione parlamentare d'inchiesta che indagò sul caso. Le inchieste della procura si aprirono due giorni dopo l'omicidio per poi terminare nel giugno del 2002 quando il sostituto procuratore generale Salvatore Cantaro chiede la conferma dell'ergastolo per Hashi Omar Hassan, arrestato a Roma nel 1998 mentre testimonia the process of alleged violence against the Italian contingent of the Somali people. Quello stesso Marocchino che poi depose davanti alla Commissione Taormina senza mai fornire, secondo la relazione di minoranza, nessun riscontro effettivo. Per il presidente della Commissione ecomafie Gaetano Pecorella "L'audizione del maresciallo Scimone, che ha operato in collaborazione con il capitano De Grazia e con i magistrati di Reggio Calabria, ha consentito alla Commissione di acquisire una notizia di estremo interesse.
